South African President Cyril Ramaphosa legalize NHI Bill.
There National Health insurance bill also known as the NHI
Bill was formally signed and put into law yesterday 15 May 2024 by the South
African President Cyril Ramaphosa. The President stated that the importance of
the NHI Bill is to address the inequality in the health sector among the people
of South Africa.
The NHI Bill will accommodate every individual in South
Africa irrespective of their Socioeconomic status. This simply means that even
unemployed citizen can enjoy private health care while the NHI fund covers the
medical expense.
However, there seems to be limitations in terms of seeking
medical care within the private sector as the private facility must be
contracted with the NHI. Therefore, before utilizing private facilities individuals
must ensure that these facilities are part of the NHI.
Many South Africans where concerned that the implementation
of this bill will have a serious impact on taxpayers as this means that they
will have to cover the expenses of the NHI fund. While many others are concerned
that this might spike the unemployment rate further as individuals that are
employed within companies offering medical aid might lose their jobs.
